THE ORIGINAL VOLUNTEERS, Vols

Tennessee is known as the "Volunteer State" for the disproportionately large number of Tennesseans who volunteered for duty in the American Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Texas Revolution (most notably the Battle of the Alamo) and especially the Mexican-American War, as well as an overwhelming number of citizens who volunteered for both sides of the Civil War. Volunteers is also the nickname of The University of Tennessee whose mascot is a Bluetick Coonhound named Smokey.
