The Ohio buckeye is the state tree of Ohio. The name buckeye comes from an Iroquois word, Hetuck, referring to the nut's resemblance to the shape and color of a deer's eye.

Ohioans have referred to themselves as Buckeyes since the presidential election of 1840, when Ohio resident William Henry Harrison won the presidency. Harrison's supporters carved campaign souvenirs out of buckeye wood to illustrate their support for their fellow Ohioan. Now the word is used as the nickname of the Ohio State University sports teams, students and alumni as well as Ohio residents. After discovering that Princeton already used the colors, orange and black, a committee of students declared Ohio State school colors would be scarlet and gray before the first graduation ceremony in 1878.
